This is awesome. So. Cool.

The set up is this is a Japanese prank show.

Today I'm excited about the release of all the new Kubrick DVDs. I picked up my two favorites, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and EYES WIDE SHUT and will be scurrying back to the store to pick up the others as soon as possible. I am a tad disappointed that BARRY LYNDON wasn't part of the new collection as that's probably my second favorite after CLOCKWORK. I love Milena Canonero's costume designs in that film. For the longest time I had thought it was Vivienne Westwood -- no clue why. I think I read it somewhere.

CLOCKWORK was the first Kubrick film I ever saw. I was only like twelve or thirteen at the time, but I remember being both terrified and amazed while watching it. I probably didn't understand it all at that age but I got enough of it to realize what it meant. I still get creeped out by some of the music from the movie. It was fun to do a reference in the introduction to the 4th BLUE MONDAY trade that I worked on. Probably scarier than the whole entire movie is seeing me in leather drawn by Chynna. Ugh.

I know that EYES WIDE SHUT is probably Kubrick's least liked film, but I always loved it. To me, it's like watching a painting. The imagery throughout the film is mind blowing, provacative and even skin crawling at times. Plus there's that film-stealing scene with Alan Cumming as the hotel concierge. Timbaland used a lot of stills and clips from the infamous "orgy" scene during his segment of Justin Timberlake's FUTURESEX/LOVESOUNDS tour that was accompanied by his own remix to the SAW theme which made for a supremely spooky few minutes and I have been wanting to rewatch the movie ever since.

    <lj:music>Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah</lj:music>

Long time no update. I have no excuse other than lazyness, sorry (hi Mom, now leave me alone).

I like things lately. These are those things.

VORTIGERN'S MACHINE AND THE GREAT SAGE OF WISDOM

This is my favorite comic book to come along in a long time. Chynna Clugston turned me onto to it in San Diego at Comic-Con and I about died laughing at it. Actually, Chynna and I were both crying at it, much to our own embarrassment. I know everyone was looking back at us like, "What the fuck are those two retards laughing at?" but oh well. It's great stuff. James Jarvis is a fantastic designer toy maker and as far as I know, this is his only graphic novel but I hope it's far from the last.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE'S FUTURESEX/LOVESOUND

As if I wasn't going to like this? Timberlake and Timbaland (collectively labeled "T-n-T") have created a pop masterpiece with this album. I haven't stopped listening to it since it leaked in mid-August, and I'm nowhere near bored of it. Justin and Tim weave back and forth between over-the-top sex ("FutureSex/LoveSound") to uptempo ballads in the vein of Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?" (the second single, "My Love"), all the way to futuristic disco that segues into a melodic, romantic serenading that paints a completely different picture using the same words as the previous ("Lovestoned/I Think She Knows"). There's even a "Cry Me A River" part 2 that combines elements from that song with those of Brandy's epic break-up ballad "I Tried" ("What Goes Around.../...Comes Around"). There's influences apparent from everyone from David Bowie, Trent Reznor, Duran Duran, The Talking Heads and Prince, but it hardly comes off as a stylistic rip-off. It quickly rose to my album of the year position.

12 REASONS WHY I LOVE HER by JAMIE S. RICH and JOELLE JONES

Jamie Rich has written two fantastic novels (with a third forthcoming), as well as given us a handful of great comics over the last couple of years, but none of that has reached the level of his upcoming graphic novel with newcomer Joelle Jones. Simply put, this is my favorite thing he's done. It immediately reminded me of one of my favorite films of all time, TWO FOR THE ROAD, and that's no small feat. The story focuses on Gwen and Evan and we travel with them through their relationship -- but the story is told completely out of order. It's not until the final two chapters that everything is tied together almost seamlessly and has you immediately wanting to turn back to page 1 and start all over again. Again, this is one of the best new comics of the year.

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER

Who would have thought a children's show on Nickelodean could be so damned charming and fun? I avoided recommendations from J. Torres, Randal Jarrell, and countless Bendis Board regulars before finally listening to Jamie Rich and delving into this fantastic new show. The deeply calculated story follows Aang, the world's last Air Bender, and current Avatar on his quest to harness the four elemental powers so that he can stop the vile Fire Nation from conquering the world. Sounds cheesy? Hardly.

The animation is top-notch, the writing is crisp and funny and each and every character is memorable. Something happens that moves the story forward in every single episode -- there's no unnecessary filler that's normally seen in "epic" shows like this (BUFFY, X-FILES to name a couple). I'm currently half way through the first season and it's only getting better.

Other things that I should at least mention would include:

* STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP

* JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA by BRAD MELTZER

* LUPE FIASCO'S FOOD & LIQUOR

* WASTELAND by ANTONY JOHNSTON and CHRISTOPHER MITTEN

* THE KILLERS' SAM'S TOWN

And of course, SHENANIGANS is now available for order (through your comic book store and Amazon). You can see all the information at Oni Press' site for the book here: http://www.onipress.com/graphicnovels/gn.php?id=153

(and the final cover looks so much better that what I just put up there. i just couldn't find the right image!)

    <lj:music>Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormenters</lj:music>

The last week has been nothing but scurrying, trying to get ready for this thing called Comic-Con. Friday was spent calling every printing place in town trying to get stickers made for STRANGETOWN (and even a few places out of state), but apparently vinyl stickers take over a week, so we'll have them at APE for sure. I am bringing STRANGETOWN POST CARDS and Chynna will be bringing STRANGETOWN BUTTONS and T-SHIRTS. I wouldn't put it past her to bring some other random goodies as well, but you never know. We'll definitely have gummies and giant pixy stix on hand though, as per usual (Hope Larson where are you?).

Saturday and Sunday were shopping days. Fuck Nordstrom for having an insanely good sale for their 100th Anniversary when we should be saving our money for San Diego!

Monday was an "Oh shit, we leave in two days and nothing is done!!!!" day, but Tuesday is looking more normal. I've kinda realized that packing for a vacation is a breeze and nothing life threatening is going to happen if I happen to forget something.

Anyway, beginning Wednesday I will be appearing at Comic-Con. I will be there all night Wednesday for preview night, probably just hanging around the Oni Press booth (#1934). My official signing schedule for the rest of the days looks something like this:

THURSDAY
10:30-11:50
1:30-2:50

FRIDAY
12:00-1:20
4:30-5:50

SATURDAY
ONI PANEL - 10:30-11:30
6:00-6:50

SUNDAY
1:30-2:50

All of my signing times are scheduled to be signing some peoples named Jamie Rich, Chynna Clugston, Mike Holmes and probably some others.

Personally I am looking forward to the debut of THE EVERLASTING from Oni, as well as getting snapshots of Martin's face at the DC Direct booth when they debut new action figures.

See some of you there.

I just heard the leaked version of Lupe Fiasco's debut. Wow. Incredible.

But now I hear they've shelved it and are working on a redo since the leak. Lame. Hope we see something eventually.

I picked up the new Thom Yorke and Muse albums yesterday. Thom's album is good, I guess...but was it really neccessary? I dunno, I just don't see the point, I guess. Muse on the other hand, is fantastic, though I heard it a couple of months ago.

I am also really digging the new Justin Timberlake single. It's like Nine Inch Nails ate him up and spit him out. Timbaland's riff is jaw-droppingly different from anything Justin has sung over before. I can't wait to hear the rest.
